Comfortable, Efficient Root Canal Therapy to Restore Your Tooth's Health

Using our CEREC® machine and 3D cone beam scanner, Dr. Aaron Stickland is able to provide root canal therapy at our Columbus, IN, office in a single visit for patients of all ages. Contrary to popular belief, root canal therapy is not painful. In fact, with advancements in technology, the procedure involves minimal discomfort, if any. Root canal therapy is used to treat tooth infection without having to remove the tooth. After root canal therapy, your tooth is repaired with either a filling or crown. It will then be healthy and fully functional.

Is Root Canal Therapy Right for Me?

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you may have damage or disease that will require root canal therapy.

  • Pain in a single tooth, accompanied by pain in the jaw near that tooth
  • Swollen gums surrounding the sore tooth
  • Discolored gums around the sore tooth
  • Sensitivity to temperature or pressure

If you are exhibiting any signs of an infection, you should contact our office right away to schedule treatment. If the damage becomes too advanced, we may need to extract the tooth and perform a more extensive a restoration, such as a single crown supported by a dental implant.

Though some patients still believe root canal therapy is painful, with advancements in technology the procedure involves minimal discomfort, if any.

What Can I Expect during Root Canal Therapy?

When you arrive for your appointment, we will use our 3D cone beam scanner to view your tooth roots and locate the infection. Once the infection has been located, we will inject a local anesthetic into your gums surrounding that tooth to completely numb the area. We also offer sedation dentistry for patients who are especially anxious about treatment.

Root canal therapy cleans out damage and disease and sterilizes the tooth. The tooth is then filled with a substitute material and restored with a dental filling or crown.

Once you are comfortable, we will create an opening in the top of your tooth and carefully clean out the pulp chamber and root canal. We will then disinfect your tooth and fill the root canal and chamber with a rubber-like material called gutta percha. In most cases, we recommend placing a dental crown over a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy, rather than a filling. Decay and infection weaken the tooth, and a filling may not provide adequate strength. Thanks to our CEREC® machine, we can place your crown right after your root canal therapy, avoiding a second trip at a later date.

What Are the Benefits of Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy saves your natural tooth, which is better for your oral health. By preserving the tooth root, we can help prevent bone loss in the area. When your treatment is complete, your tooth will be restored to its natural appearance and normal use. A root canal also eliminates the need for more extensive restorations, which can be more invasive and more costly.
